I have a url where I host the central admin site

I also have an alternate access mapping so I can use https://

I've set them both as public URL's so I have to put one in the Default
zone (http), and one in the Intranet zone. (https)

My main content site is hosted in the application https://main:443
(public URL, default zone)

It also has an old url I wanted to bring forward as https://old:443 so
people don't have to change their old URL's (public URL Intranet Zone)

I never noticed before but when I log into the Central Admin site from
one URL, the application dropdowns for creating a new site collection
reflect the application that corresponds to the same zone.

is there a substantial difference between logging in to
http://internal:10080 then create a site collection at https://main:443

and logging in to https://internal:10443 then creating a site
collection at https://old:443

They both are accessible from either URL (main, or old) but I want to
make sure nothing is happening in the background that will cause me
trouble later.

It is fine to manage your sites and web apps either way. That's the
whole reason SharePoint has zones. Sounds like you have the process
