WSS2 & Office 2007 & IE7 problems opening files

Asked By: Judson David         Date: Feb 02, 2007      Category: MOSS      Views: 278

The situation:

WSS2 site, XLSX (Office 2007) Excel document, viewing through IE7.

The problem is that if I click the XSLX document, IE prompts be to SAVE
FILE when I click on 'open' instead of just opening it in Excel so I can
then just save directly back to Sharepoint. Anyone know why this is?
Desktop issue? Server issue? Fixable?

Since WSSv2 predates the release of Office 2007 there will be no entry
in the DOCICON.XML file for how to handle a XSLX file. You might try
adding an XLSX entry that is the same as the XLS entry in the
DOCICON.xml file stored in TEMPLATE/XML directory of the 12 hive.

If that doesn't work check your File associations in IE7 under
[ALT]Tools->Options->Programs->Set Programs. If you don't have an
association for XLSX that would also be a problem.
