WSS v3 Search - Subsite Search Capability?

Asked By: Dominique Higgins         Date: Oct 25, 2007      Category: MOSS      Views: 593

It was my understanding that WSS 3.0 only allowed you to search the
current site or any sites that are linked via the top link bar. I was
thinking about using Kwizcom's v3 search product, so I started testing
the product (beta for v3). I decided to compare a few of the tests
against WSS v3's out of the box search and noticed that the out of the
box WSS v3 search seems to search all subsites.

Is WSS v3 supposed to search all subsites by default? Does the search
have anything to do with sites linked via the top link bar or quick
launch?

Correct, that in WSSv3, a search  at any site  can include results from
any subsite  within it, but will not include anything above it. That's
where MOSS enterprise search comes in (Allowing you to search all across
your farm)

The top  link bar  and Quick launch bar, is just a list of links. WSS
search has nothing to do with what you have added/referenced in your top
link bar or quick launch.
