WSS v3 Hosting?

Asked By: Brendan    Date: Mar 22    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 836

I am building a site collection for a client that will have many sub
sites. I want to use forms based authentication for the collection.
There is also the possibility of having a few custom features. All
SharePoint work that i've done in the past has been hosted on servers
that i have complete access to. I am wondering if by having the site
hosted by a hosting provider if i will lose the ability to use tools
like stsadm. Does anyone know what capabilities i would lose by using a
hosting provider. Can anyone suggest a few providers that may cater to
the customized needs of this type of project?

You'll need to check with the host about administrative access. I posed a
similar question to a local host at yesterday's Sydney SharePoint Conference,
specifically about gaining access  to the 12 hive to add Features and other
custom components, and the answer was no (although the host has a team who can
do any custom  installations on my behalf). You might also ask if this would be
possible if you had your own dedicated server - some hosts offer a dedicated
server hosting  solution. Once again, this may depend on what type  of security
policies the host has in place.
