Wss site template customization

I am the Sharepoint administrator. We
have been working with Sharepoint for about 4 months now. Suddenly I
find myself in the position of Sharepoint developer (or so I am
told). I have been charged with the task of customizing our wss
sites. I have absolutely no experience in this. So, my question is
this...

What is used to customize the site templates? What language? I have
seen mention of CAML, CSS, .NET, FP2003, Java, and probably many
more. If I just want to change the color scheme and add a logo to
the top navigation bar, what skills do I need? I have very little
programming experience, but could learn and use some of the
resources at my company.

Can anyone recommend a good training course to accomplish this?

You don’t need to be a programmer to update the look and feel of a site. You can accomplish  what you need to do with some tweaks to CSS code (cascading style sheets), some image replacements and maybe a few easy edits to XML files if you need to deploy a theme.

Do you have a portal site  or a wss  site, or both? What type of site you need to customize  will dictate what you need to do. Here are some resources to start with, let me know if you have any specific questions.

It is a lot of information
to absorb. I will look through it and learn, learn, learn.

You will probably start with CSS for customization. That's the easiest
way to make simple or dramatic look and feel changes.
