WSS Search problems

I have a WSS site (created within SPS2003, it's not stand-alone), and
when I search the site from the WSS home page, I get no results, but
I get a link to search at the SPS level for the same terms. The
ensuing SPS search returns content that I expect within the original
WSS site.

If I am on a doclib page on this WSS site, and I search for known
content (for instance, one of the filenames in the doclib itself) I
get no results, but I don't get a "try your search from the portal"
link.

Maybe I'm making the wrong assumption, but it would seem that you
should be able to search from a WSS site home page and return results
only from that site (auto-scoping the search, if you will). And the
same can be said of searching on a doclib or list page: you would
expect results just from your current context.

Do I possibly have a configuration error? I get the same results for
indexed XLSs or PDFs, by the way (that's as many filetypes as I
wanted to try before posting).

There are a few thing you can check

1) Go to WSS Central administration & ensure full-text indexing is enabled
2) Go to the DB and ensure that the Full-text index is created (You will
most likely have a 1 MB index with no words)
3) The account running full-text index is not a system administrator.
Either add Builtin\Administrators to the SA role, or change the MSSearch
service to run as a domain\computer account that has the SA role in the DB.
This was the fix in our environment.

I did have full-text indexing enabled in wss admin, but in checking on your step 2 below, I realized that full-text searching wasn’t installed on the db server.

So I installed that SQL server component, and wss search works now how I initially expected.
