WSS Restore

Asked By: Gonzalo    Date: Mar 14    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 967

I have a virtual server that has 100GB of disk space with 60GB available. I
backup a site collection from another server (10GB). When I tried restoring to
my virtual server, I get this errorr message:

The site collection could not be restored. If this problem persists, please make
sure the content databases are available and have sufficient free space.

How do I know how much space I need or is there something else that I'm missing?

I forgot to add that I installed the complete WSS, which means I used the MSDE
and not the full SQL.

You cannot restore  a copy of a site  collection into the same Content Database as
the original version. Any chance there's another version of this Site
Collection in your destination? If so, create a new Content Database, set your
initial one to "Offline" and restore your Site collection  into your new Content

The new server  is a brand new install. The only site  collection in there is the
one it sets up automatically.

Can you verify that the Content Database on the new server  is set to Ready (as
opposed to Offline) and that it has fewer site  collections in it than the Max

This is the first time that I'm doing an installation with the MSDE SQL but for
some reason, the management studio will not allow me to connect to the instance
that MOSS created. I logged in as both the local admin as well as the service
account and no luck. Any ideas?

You can't use the regular SQL 2005 Management studio to manage SQL
Express instances. You need to download and install the SQL Express
specific Management Studio. You can get it here:

One more question, can we use stsadm to backup and restore  a site  when using

It just occurred to me to ask. Are you doing this on SharePoint 2003 or
2007? 2003 uses MSDE, but 2007 uses SQL Express. You should be able to
use STSADM to backup either 2003 or 2007.
