WSS Required on Farm?

Asked By: Jill    Date: Nov 17    Category: MOSS    Views: 634

I'm running MOSS and we're utilizing web services to provide search to
our main page.

If I disable WSSSearch, search seems to continue to work both on the
sharepoint sites and from web services.

When WSS Search is disabled from "Services on Server" I get the warning
"Required on Farm, Not running"

Is it really required if I'm already running MOSS Search?

It is interesting that you have to configure WSSSearch from each shared
service provider. How do you consume search from each shared service? Is
it odd that things are still working?

In a MOSS install WSSSearch is used as the search  service for WSS and
MOSS Help functionality. That's why you get the requirement. Turning
it off will only break searching in the HELP. This is only true if you
are running  MOSS.
