I am having trouble with STSADM (by the way I figured out what I was
doing wrong before getting my backups to work) When I try to restore
a top-level site  I get this message. "Your backup is from a different
version of windows SharePoint and cannot be restored to a server
running this version"
The best I can tell both versions are running 2.0.

Is one using the latest service pack and the other not?

I'm not real sure how do I find that data?

I'm only guessing but perhaps the SchemaVersion field in the that
Globals table of the SPS01_Config_db database contains different values
for the two versions. I know that the schema changes when SP1 is
applied. I haven't researched specifically what was changed, but pre-SP1
databases cannot be used on SP1 installations.

I'm not sure either. <g>

Anyone know how to tell if SP1 is installed?

I got! If you look in add remove programs click on the support
infomation link it brings up the version info. You can upgrade one
of the servers so the versions match then use STSADM to move  your
site collection.
