wss intranet access via ssl vpn - keep getting prompted for credent

We have set up an intranet site for our company. One of the divisions
wants to allow their salesreps to access their part of the SharePoint
intranet. None of their reps use company PCs. So to keep our network
secure, we set up an SSL VPN to get them past the firewall. We are
testing the whole process at the moment and have found the following
issues:
1.) When they log in to the SharePoint intranet, they are prompted for
their credentials.
2.) When they try to read a posted document, they are prompted for
their credentials.
This was found to be the case using a PC running Windows 2000.
Is there anything that I can do so that they will not be prompted again
after their initial login to the SharePoint intranet?

add the site  to Internet Explorer 'Trusted Sites' and verify that zone has 'automatic logon with current username and password' checked in custom settings.
