WSS Extranet

Asked By: Alyson    Date: Apr 07    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 785

Is it possible to have an Extranet with just WSS? Would we need to have an intermediary page so that users could log in? The reason I am asking is because we are interested in building a public facing (limited access, closed system) SharePoint portal but we do not need the MY Sites, News, audiences and all the other features of SPS but we do need a launch pad.

Very possible, in fact, I just deployed one. Any questions?

I use a hosted WSS extranet  for a client of mine. They use it for business associates to enter sales leads onto. Works well and they love it.

yes. who handled the user account management? was the server in AD creation mode or was IT department involved in user account administration?

It really depends on your scenario… You mentioned that yours is a closed  system. I suppose you should have an existing AD right? ADACM mode is normally used when it is open…

This box lives in a DMZ and this DMZ has its own Domain. We
provisioned accounts from Internal to external via MIIS. access  to
managing Domain User accounts such as creating new external domain
users was completed via a Third Party webpart from DotNetFactory
called ADWebmanager. This limited  the exposure to AD users  and
Computers to the help desk and sec Admin group. Also we set up
filters to allow the Support groups to only see users that were part
of the sharepoint  initiative... meaning the current External AD has
over 1 million accounts but only 500 are Sharepoint users.

Access to the various sharepoint sites  was accomplished in the
normal fashion of adding the various users to there assigned
sites.... I attempted to push the use of access via groups but
because of the amount of groups to sites... it would become a burden
for the Support Team to keep track of everything.

that solution just got real expensive!

im interested  to know how the hosting providers handle this. any hosting providers out there?

I didnt recall your original question specifying a cheap
solution.

MIIS was already in existance here so we are simply utilizing it to
bring Internal Account out to the External Domain while keeping the
users logon and password information.

Yes, you can have an extranet  with just WSS. Just ensure you’ve purchased either Windows Server CALs or an external connector licence if you’ll have anonymous access  to your sites.

...it's very expensive for an SPS external connector, around $35k per front end. we had to buy 2.

Just to make your day… MS is saying that you really need three – one for the index server as well. I don’t agree with this interpretation of the license agreement, however, I’ve had at least one CAS client who purchased three licenses.

No way – Index? Clients don’t connect to the Index server! Sometimes, there is good reason  to call them Micro$oft.

I am actually going to start blogging again, btw. I had some other issues to deal with over the winter that are resolved. I have another blog in process explaining integrated authentication in and out of a domain and how to use in conjunction with excluded managed paths.
