WSS: Discussion Board webpart Problems

Asked By: Imdrajit    Date: Oct 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1230

I've spent time trying to customize Disc.Board webparts'
threaded views, and I thought I'd post this report in
case someone else found it useful.

Whenever I try to sort a WSS threaded discussion by newest
first (descending), it de-threads itself. This causes me
personally no end of agitation , so I went on a quest to
figure out how to change this.

WSS' XML files "ONET.XML" and "SCHEMA.XML" seemed to be key.
In ONET.XML, in the section that described Discussion
Board web parts, I saw a variable named "Threading" that I
assumed, if understood, could be used to create a new
threaded view. I see another mention of this in
the "SCHEMA.XML" file. In the default threaded
view "Allitems.aspx," I see the variable "Threading"
somehow related to the list field (ie coulmn) "Replies,"
as well as "Thread ID."

I found a link to this document somewhere:
office.microsoft.com/.../preview.aspx
33&CTT=4&Origin=CH063547431033

It talks about creating a new threaded view in FrontPage.
The FrontPage 2003 interface option that gives you a bunch
of variables for each discussion post is very interesting.

It appears that the field(variable) "Thread ID" changes
only for a new thread, not for each post. This sounds like
a good thing to filter by...but:

The first 9 or so characters of the Thread ID variable are
a DATE. So if you sort by Thread ID at all, you
automatically get oldest first. Which is what I was
trying to avoid in the first place. -__-;

In conclusion, we have to re-make the "Thread ID" variable
of the discussion board web part at some level in order to
fix this highly unnecessary problem.
