WSS Data Migration

Asked By: Kevin    Date: Oct 21    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 913

When we very first started out with our WSS site in a pilot mode we
ended up creating site under site under site, etc, etc. Now that we
have learned a bit more about site collections and the like we are
now looking at the need to migrate say a site that is 5 levels down
in the original site collection into a site collection of its own...
are there tools out there to help us do this? Also to add to the
mix is the fact that we want to create our own customized site
template so that going forward all of our team sites will be created
equal. Is this going to end up being a manual migration of data
since we are changing the template of the site as well?

The docs imply that once a Site is created it is forever tied to the
underlying Site Definition from which it came. If you are planning on
changing these, you will need to make good use of STP files to migrate
your lists and their data  (10 MB limit).
