WSS Account Creation Mode - Adding new users

Asked By: Denny    Date: Dec 01    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1423

I am in the process of setting up a WSS site as an external facing
extranet for non-company employees, I have setup WSS in AD Account
Creation mode and have created a seperate OU which works fine.

However when I add a new user to the portal I have to specify the
new user in the format of an email address username@domain_name
where domain name is our company email domain name. i.e. @acme.com

If I try to add a user with an email address which is not part of
the company domain i.e. 'john.doe@...' I receive the
following error The email address 'john.doe@...' is unknown.

As all my users are going to be external users they will not have
company email addresses. This means that when I create the user
they will not be notifed that they have been added to the portal or
notified of their new password as the email address is wrong. I
hope I am making sense.

Does anyone know how to add users to the portal in this scenario ?

What we do is we have two Active directory domains - one for internal
users and one for external  users. When we want to give extranet access
to our clients, we add  a new user  to the Active Directory domain. In AD,
you can specify their email  address, and then you can add the users
using the format  domain\username.

thanks for the response, does this mean when I add  the user  to this
domain I can specify any email  address, this is important as from
what I can gather the password  is generated automatically and this
would be sent to the user in the welcome email.

One other question, does this mean I have to re-install WSS ? or can
I use the command line or web interface to change the domain  ?

It does mean that you can use any email  address. However, with our
approach, we create  the passwords for them.

I don't think you need to do anything to change the domain. We never did
when we added  our second domain. We just began typing in
domain2\username whenever we needed to add  someone, and it took.
