WSS 3 Search capabilities - "custom document properties"

Could someone verify whether or not Windows SharePoint Services version 3 can search on "custom document properties" within documents on a WSS 3 site?

A friend of mine told me that this is only enabled when MOSS is installed. can you confirm?
