WSS 3.0 with MOSS 2007 search function not working

We just launched the new SharePoint site V3.0 with MOSS 2007
installed.

All seems to work, except the search function.

On the top right side of the page is the search box. If I enter a
word there I know is in a contact list on the same site, or for that
matter, any word that exists in the same site, and then click on the
Serach icon, I get a search results page that says "no match for that
word found, etc, etc."

So, no matter what word I search for, I get back that it could not
find a Match.

What am I doing wrong? is there some setting I need to make to get
searching on my site working? Or is it some setup not done on the
webserver itself? Or the SQL server?

I thought this thing should work right out of the box.

The first couple things I thought of when I read your post (without
know how/what is configured in your farm) is to make sure that the
WSS search service has been started and configured with a user that
has access to the content. You can use a farm policy to enforce that
this user has access to all the content within all your sites (common
mistake).

Another thing I thought of, has a crawl been kicked off from the SSP
since you added your content to the site? Obviously, if a crawl
hasn't happened, the content won't show in the results. I would try
opening up your SSP and kick off a full crawl and see if the
documents are in the index thereafter.

You were right ON with your suggestions. We did not start the Search
service, nor did a crawl. So, now it all works.
