WSS 3.0 - Clients unable to open files in modify mode...

Asked By: Susana    Date: May 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3034

In a lan with 5 clients, I have 3 clients that open word or excel files only
in read mode.

With the other clients (working) , when I click on a document in the "Shared
Documents" folder, a message window appear asking if I want to open the file
only in read or in modify and all work fine. I can modify the file than
close it and all changes are regularly applied.

When I try the same procedure with the other clients, the message box don't
compare but only the classic IE window asking if I want to open the file ora
save it in some place.
If I choose to open, the file is only in read mode.

The differences between the working clients and the faulty, is that on the
first the office version is the 2003 and on the other there is the XP
version and Openoffice.

Maybe could be this the reason ?

Yes, the version  of Office in use will have a great deal of effect on the
integration functionality with SharePoint. To get the best integration and
most features, you really need to go to Office 2007. And even then you will
not get some functions unless it is at least Office Pro (Or Enterprise)

Some time ago I found a document  with a tabel comparision for WSS and Office
Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember that 2003 and 2000 version  are supported
(with limitations).

Is this right ?

At least office  XP with latest Service Pack should insalled however all
features will not be available

Check these two KBs

You cannot create a new document  or check out an existing document in a
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library when you have multiple
versions of Office installed

To confirm if this is becasue of office version  you can uninstall any other
version of office and then install Office 2007 or minimum 2003. There are
conflicts sometimes when multiple versions of office are installed on the
same client machine as mentioned in the above KB.
