WSS 2 to WSS 3 Gradual upgrade on 64 bit servers

Asked By: Aiesha    Date: Dec 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 14433

How can we upgrade existing WSS 2 (and portal) server farm on 32 bit
servers and 2 node SQL 2000 cluster to new WSS 3 server farm on new 64
bit WSS and SQL servers? Should we build a new WSS 2 environment in 32
bit emulation mode, move the databases then do a gradual upgrade to WSS
3? The databases are very large and the structure is currently portal
mixed with WSS. We want to move and upgrade the WSS-only sites to the
new farm. How would we benefit from 64 bit front-end servers? Rebuild
them after the upgrade to WSS 3 is complete?

Microsoft recommend to a content migration approach when moving from
32-bit to 64-bit, i.e., build WSSv3 on your 64-bit machines, and then
attach the WSSv2 content databases, it is also faster than the
gradual upgrade  method. Make sure you plan well. See Admin Companion,
Ch 23, and the following blog, which has a wealth of information
upgrade-articles-and-posts.aspx. Also look at
let-me-give-you-4-more.aspx, in particular the "Multi Threaded
Database Attach" method.
