World's Biggest Document Libraries

Asked By: Dejuan    Date: Jul 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1026

I'm more curious as to anything if anyone could share their experiences
with Document Libraries in WSS/SPS2003. I am wondering what is the
biggest size library possible and what the limitations are on this.

- What is largest document library size supported?
- What are the drawbacks to having gigantic document libraries?
- Is recommended to create a separate "dedicated" content-database for
WSS Site collections that are expected to house GB and GB of docs in
libraries?

If anyone could share, shed light or point me in the direction of where
to find more information on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what's the largest Document Library that you have in your
installation?

To answer your direct questions:

- What is largest document  library size  supported?

[reply] On an item level, 2 million

- What are the drawbacks to having gigantic document libraries?

[reply] You'll need to use nested folders so you don't run into
performance issues because of the number of items in document libraries.

I just wrote a blog posting on item capacity within folders for Document
libraries, and a comparison of V2/V3.

ems-per-folder-in-sharepoint-now/

- Is recommended  to create  a separate  "dedicated" content-database  for
WSS site  collections that are expected  to house GB and GB of docs  in
libraries?

[reply] This would be my number one recommendation. Don't just
create content databases for all your site collections, but do monitor
their size and plan accordingly. If you expect that a site collection
will literally hold multiple gigs of data, you'll want it by itself for
multiple reasons (Performance, backup/recovery, etc)

For 2003, please review the capacity planning guidelines here:
