workflow pause problem

I add a workflow in sharepoint designer, then I add a pause for a duration for
one minute action for the workflow to pause for one minute. but when I start the
workflow for an item in a list, the workflow pauses for ever and never
terminates.
why doesn t my workflow terminate after one minute?
