Workflow limitations

Asked By: Sampat    Date: Nov 16    Category: MOSS    Views: 950

We've been playing around with workflows in SharePoint 2007 -
specifically, the out-of-the-box document library "Approval"
workflow. It does exactly what we need - with one exception. The
problem is in the way it links to the document. In the emails the
workflow sends, it only includes a simple link to the document -
no "Edit in Microsoft Word", no checkout option, nothing. We've
enforced checkout on the site, and it even bypasses that step when
you click on the link in the email. You can edit the document by
following the link in the email, but your only option to save it is
to your own desktop - not back to the SharePoint site. And the same
kind of document link appears in the task the workflow generates.

This is not workable for us. Can anyone think of a way to send the
user through the checkout process and into an editable and saveable
version of the document, but by way of a link through the email or
the task? I had thought one way might be to somehow modify the link
the email sends out, so it would send the user to the "Edit
Properties" page in the document library instead. But the "Edit in
Microsoft Word" button that was in the toolbar in SP 2003 is no
longer there in 2007 - so unless I can find a way to add it back in,
that's out.

Anyways... Any help, thoughts, or ideas on this would be much
appreciated! I'm not sure how to get around this problem, and it
really is a deal-breaker for us.
