Using Word and XML to ease / automate web part page creation?

I'm working on a project right now where we have several teams
creating methodologies. The methods will each have a set
of "activities" comprised of predacessors, successors, inputs,
outputs, etc. The teams are comfortable using Word to develop the
content for each of these pages. However, I'm going to need an easy
way to port these into the portal (probably areas...and I'm thinking
about web part pages for each activity to promote reuse). I was
thinking that if I could use xml in Word I'd be able to automate it
going into the portal somehow.

I have three questions:
1) does this sound feasible?
2) has anyone done something similar to this that you'd be willing
to talk about and share?
3) what are some good books you know of to help me get started? I
see several XML / Office books on Amazon and books24x7, but there
aren't many reviews.
