Word / Excel hang when opening files from Sharepoint

Asked By: Gonzalo    Date: Mar 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 6138

I'm using SharePoint 2003 and Office 2003, SharePoint site is on a
server running Windows 2003 Server, and my laptop is running Windows
XP Pro.

When I try to open a Word or Excel file from SharePoint, there are one
of two messages displayed : one is titled File Download, and the
message is :

>>>>>>>>>>
Some files can harm your computer, etc.

File Name : xxx.doc
File Type : Microsoft Word Document
From : xxxServer

Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?

Buttons : Open, Save, Cancel, More Info
<<<<<<<<<<

- when I click Open on this message, it opens fine.

The other message is titled "Microsoft Internet Explorer" and the
message is :

>>>>>>>>>>
Some files can harm your computer, etc.

You are opening the following file :
File Name : xxx.doc
From : xxxServer

Buttons : Ok, Cancel
<<<<<<<<<<

- if I click Ok, it begins to launch Word, prompts me for my username
and password, and then hangs after I enter them.

I am authorised to open these files - I created most of them, and
could open them no problem previously. And one day last week for no
apparent reason, all the files opened fine. I have no idea why. The
next morning, it was back to square one - hanging again.

I'm really at a loss on this, and it's preventing us from rolling out
SharePoint within the company, so if anyone can shed any light it, it
would be very much appreciated!

reinstall OWC.msi

sounds like your office web client is messed up. what type of authentication is your IIS server? windows integrated?

Other authentication issues with IE revolve around the zone of the SPS site.
Only if it is in the Intranet zone is your local logon credentials passed
through. Trusted sites still require individual logons. Sometimes links hit
sites that not listed as Intranet sites and the logon pops up even though the
site hosting the hyperlink was an Intranet site and the logon was transparent.
