Which server components on which server?

Asked By: Taylor    Date: Dec 30    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 624

I'm playing around with SPSv2 deployment and trying to determine which
server to install SPSv2, Exchange (including OWA), SQL, and ISA Server,
Windows 2000, and Windows 2003. It's a fairly light load, probably no
more than 30-40 users logged on at any given time.

Obviously SPSv2 and Windows 2003 need to be paired. Other than that, I'm
at a complete loss as to how best to deploy this. Would SQL be best on
the same server as SPSv2, or a different server? Where should Exchange
go? Which server should be the domain controller? What about ISA?

Server 1 has dual 1.0Ghz processors, 512mb RAM, a SCSI RAID 1 array, and
a SCSI RAID 5 array.

Server 2 will have a single 2.0Ghz processor, 512mb RAM, and either a
SCSI or IDE RAID 5 array.

if you are just playing around with SPS V2 -Tech Refresh (and no intent
to place it in production), then I suggest installing it on a single server
using the MSDE (forget using SQL). However, if you are testing scenarios
for a real deployment  you could use your server  #2 as the SPS (Portal
Server) and Server #1 as your SQL server. The faster processor (Server #2)
will help with running all the SPS Services & Java Scripts.

I would recommend Exchange, ISA, and Active Directory (Domain Controller)
run on servers other than the SQL and SPS - easier problem isolation.
If you are stuck for resources - go back to running SPS with MSDE on one
server (forget SQL) and everything else on the other server (and flip the
roles:: SPS on Server #1).
