Where'd my Site Collection go???

Asked By: Kenny    Date: Mar 31    Category: MOSS    Views: 703

I've attached a content database to a web app in MOSS that had a top
level site collection and a ton of sub sites when it was previously
connected to a different web app. But now, after I connect to the db,
the CA shows "0" site collections for the app that is connected to that
db, and I cannot see anything when I attept to hit it with HTTP. Can
anyone shed some light on why this is happening and how to correct it?

Attached or Added? If you Added an extra content  database to an
existing one for a web  app then you should see the old content and new
sites should be created in the new database. If you attached  an
existing content database  to a web app  that had sites  in it and left the
old content database there you've now got two content databases that
contain information about different site  collections and sites. This
could easily cause corruption causing the system to think that there is
nothing readable there. If you remove the newly attached content
database you may be able to see the old again. I've had no luck
re-attaching existing content databases unless I was attaching them back
to a Web app with the same name and managed paths as the original Web
app.

Was the original web  application on the same farm? If so, it's because of a
conflict with the GUIDs stored in the Config DB.

Thanks for your reply...

Yes it was on the same farm, just wanted to move it to another app.
Can I fix the conflict?

You should just create a script using STSADM to backup the site  collections,
delete them from the original web  application and then restore them to the new
application. That would remove the GUIDs from the config DB and you shouldn't
experience any conflicts.
