Weather Web Part

Asked By: Karen    Date: Jan 09    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3136

We require authentication to access the Internet with HTTP behind our
corporate firewall. However, HTTPS is universally allowed. The MSNBC
Weather web part prompts for authentication when used on our portal
because it uses an HTTP URL. I tried editing the code to use HTTPS but
it didn't work. Can anyone suggest a weather web part that uses an
HTTPS URL or some other solution?

You can get an XML feed from the weather  Channel by signing up here: http://www.weather.com/services/xmloap.html
Then you can create your own web  part that can pass through the proxy credentials that you need, and format it the way you'd like. Works great for us! Here's an example of what you can do (the forecast is available through a mouse-over). Sorry, I'm unable to share the full code  here..

Word of warning - follow their business rules and cache the data on an appropriate time-scale. This is important since you are hitting an external source for your data and don't want to take that performance hit every time your page loads.
