Virtual Server for testing/developing Sharepoint

Asked By: Keon    Date: Jun 15    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 891

I am in the starting phases of planning, developing and testing
Sharepoint Portal Server in our environment. The initial phase will
obviously be a lot of planning and then move to testing in a virtual
environment. We want to test in a pretty low cost environment and I
was wondering if you think this environment will work for about 10-15
test users. It will all be moved to brand new servers once a lot of
testing has been done.

P4 3.0 HT
4GB PC3200
40GB Utra ATA drive for 2003 server OS and programs
80GB 7200RPM SATA HD - for Virtual SQL Server 2000
40GB 7200RPM SATA HD - for Virtual 2k3 server hosting Sharepoint Web,
Index, Search and Job

I think the major bottleneck here will be the hard drives but
hopefully it will do for a cheap test environment.

yeah that works, so long as you dont have virtual  machines fighting for the same I/O

allocate about 1gb to your sql
allocate about 512mb to your front-ends.
seperate disks for each virtual

This is what I will have when all the parts get in.

4gb ddr2 pc3200 ram
WD ATA 7200RPM 80GB HD with 8MB cache
Seagate SATA 7200RPM 80GB HD with 8MB cache
Samsung SATA 7200RPM 40GB HD with 8MB cache (came with computer)

Right now this is how I think I am going to configure it:
WD ATA drive  - Host 2k3 server  and virtual  Server app
Seagate SATA - Host Virtual Sharepoint Web Server
Samsung SATA - Host Virtual SQL 2000 server

Do you think that is about the best performance I will get? What if I
used 2k3 dynamic raid functions to raid the two sata drives and host
both of the virtual servers  on a raid? DO you think that would hurt
or help performance?
