Views displaying items

Asked By: Krista    Date: May 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 598

we have a WSS site with a lot of custom views set up on document
libraries.
The issue we are having is whenever you specify to display more than a
2000 items in a view, the response time is very slow.
There are no formulas or anything related attached to the fields that
are being displayed in the view.
As soon as I change the items to be displayed to 100 it is very fast
responding.
I know there is no limit technically at to how many items can be
displayed in a list through a custom view altough I've heard that 10000
might be the magic number.
Has anyone else experienced something similar or have any ideas as to
what might be causing the items to be displayed in the screen so slowly.

2000 items  per list is the recommended limit.

2000 is a commonly used threshold but it is just a recommendation.
Otherwise the page starts to really bog down. Any Web Page with
thousands of rows of data in one grid will be slow. However, if you are
trying to group data and don't need the details, convert the LVWP to a
DVWP and you can just show the group headings. We have lists with tens
of thousands of listitems that can be viewed using DVWPs.

As a side bar, the V2 database isn’t optimized for tens of thousands of rows in a single list. All of the data in the list has to be read by the database server to satisfy any query on the list so use large lists with extreme caution.
