Versioning: Wordperfect

Is there a way to make WordPerfect work as WORD does for versioning on
Sharepoint 2003 Team Services. Currently, one can open a document from SP in
WP, edit it, and save it back to SP. However, the versioning does not appear
to work.
Is there some particular threshold of changes one has to make to a document
(WP or WORD) in order for a new version to be created?
