Versioning of Web Part Page

Asked By: Claude    Date: Jun 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 905

I am creating web pages in Sharepoint Portal Server and have created
a document library to store these pages. While creating the document
library I enabled the document versioning.

- I create a web part page and add some web parts to it. Close it.
- I again open the web part page by clicking on "Modify Shared Page"
and make changes to the page(eg add some more web parts)
- I go back to the document library and click on the aspx file to see
the version history.
- I do not see the earlier version of the document.

The Sharepoint help link on versioning says hat you cannot have any
versioning on HTML pages. Would web part page fill in that category.

Is there any way I can get the earlier version of the web part pages
in Sharepoint.

Try editing it in FrontPage and I'll be you see versions.

Here are the steps that I do

open  the web  part page  in Front Page
click  on one of the web part  zones link  to add  a web part
I get the web part listing on the right
I add a web part and close  front page
I am promped to save the aspx  page
I click "Yes"
The page shows the updated web part
I go back  in document  library to see the version  history
I do not see any earlier version of the document

While I understand this approach may work in some situations where
you may be editing the actual page, this is apparently not going to
work if you are going to make changes to either the web parts  or the
content of the web part. Example of changes in the web part can be a
Content Editor Web Part.

I do not see this approach practical in prduction scenario

Also will edits in Front Page not lead to unghosting of the pages.

Apparently you can't version  a web  Part page  like a traditional
document.

Yes, editing in FrontPage will certainly unghost the page.
