Users online indicator

Using a hosted WSS 3.0, how can we get the users online indication to

What is the minimum we need? I have seen places that suggest Live
communicator, would that work as we do not have the share point portal
in our domain? If this did work could it be user opaque? I hope this
does not lead down the exchange route - we are not using that.

I can see, If I use my windows live account and sign in to messenger
that I am online. This seems a reather convoluted way to inducate who
is on line when they have all logged in to the hosted site already.

Do I now have to get all users to have a messenger account and then
log into that as well?? Most of my users are not that comfortable with
IT as it is!

You'll need their IM addresses to be the same as their email addresses
on the site. Then you'll need to use one of Microsoft's IM clients and
add their IM/Email address to your buddy list. Then their presence
should show up in SharePoint.
