User is not able access the sharepoint site

I'm working as a Sharepoint Administartor but I really know nothing
about Sharepoint. I've a ticket now, which I need to complete it now.
One of the user is not able access the sharepoint site. If she uses
network to access the site, she isn't able to access the site. But if
she uses standalone system she is able to access it. So, from this it
is obvious that, there is nothing wrong with her password. Also there
is nothing wrong with web part links. Does it be something with
firewall settings? If you know it is because of other issue please
mail me.
Also please let know some good Sharepoint book to learn abt this
soon (other than Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies
Resource kit. BEcause I'm already using that).

If I understand your question correctly, then it may be a matter of
proper URL.

What URL is she using to access your SharePoint site? Chances are
that you will access a site differently if it is a strictly intranet
site. Intranet URL could be: http://myportal or http://mysite;
external access could be http://mysite.companyname.com and then she
would be prompted for her account name and password.

Is she a remote user, or inside the firewall?

Is she running through a proxy? If so either unchekc connect
through a proxy or configure the proxy to pass the credentials.

I have had this problem when the dns setting are not setup correctly on the user's pc.

Please clarify when they can gain access and when they can't as well
as your set up.

It could be as easy as your browser settings. Is this an Active
directory install, is there a firewall on the machine? what are the
security settings of the browser?
