User Already Exists Problem

Asked By: Jedidiah    Date: Aug 27    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1747

I think I've seen something about this before but have searched the archives
with no luck. We have a user whose AD account got corrupted and their
account was deleted from AD and then recreated. After that they could no
longer access the their office team site under our portal. They kept getting
access denied. We deleteed their account from the users for the team site
and tried to add them back and we got this error:

Can not add the user because a user with that name already exists.

We deleted the user account from the portal user profile database and still
no luck. The Reader Group for the site contains the AD Group for all our
Domain Users. Could that be causing the problem?

Problem solved based on Posting "User Cannot be found error  when
granting portal  permission" by Jay Graff

I went to
http://servername/sitedirectory/_layouts/1033/siteusrs.aspx and sure
enough the account  was listed there. Best I can determine is that
whenever a user  visits the site  and is a member of the Domain Group
then an entry for the individual user is made in this list so that
the Group membership doesn't have to be searched again the next time
the user visits. Anyway, I deleted  the user from this llist and then
was able to add  the user back.

This is a known "feature". This is precisely why the Members Web Part
and the Assigned To column of Tasks and Issues Lists (and any other list
with a Lookup on User Information) will only show individuals that have
visited the site. It's a blessing and a curse (more of a curse if you
ask me).

But just imagine if I added All Authenticated Users or the Everyone AD
Group in a large organization to a site  or List permissions set and SPPT
had to go lookup that information every time the Members Web Part or
User Lookup was displayed. That could be devastating and far less than
