URL / SPD workflow pulling out what is left of my hair issue

So I am on WSS 3.0, using a SPD workflow. The workflow works fine when the URL
is like so:
www.url.com however, if it looks like url.com without the www. in it, the
workflow fails to go.

Has anyone had this happen before? I just can't figure out what to do with this.

It is wired into a calendar list to send an email for a clean up. It looks at
the date in the morning and sends an email to the user that is listed on that
date.

Can you just redirect the user to the www.url.com address?

We use the free version of Helicon's ISAPI Rewrite (an IIS ISAPI filter) to
do this on our SharePoint servers with no problems.
