Does anybody know how I can upload a document from a client machine
to one of workspaces on sharepoint server?

Here is the easiest way:

1. Create a web folder on the client  PC pointing to the workspace on
your server.
2. Open the Documents folder and navigate to the folder where you want
the document  to reside within the workspace.
3. Locate the file on your pc and copy it into this folder.
4. Right click on the file and select Check In.
5. The Metadata profile should come up, fill it out and there should be
a checkbox to allow you to publish the document. If not, then once you
finish this step, you can right click on the file again and select
