Upgrading WSS to V3.0, but leaving SPS at 2003

Asked By: Madison Lang         Date: Jan 24, 2007      Category: MOSS      Views: 250

I have a medium farm configuration that I am considering upgrading to
WSS V3.0. However, since I don't have budget for MOSS 2007, I am
considering only upgrading the WSS portion, and leaving the SPS part
(portals, mysites, indexing, search) at the current 2003 version.

Has anyone done this? Will this work?

You have a couple of choices here, both of which require you to move your
current WSS Team sites into their own content database if they existin in the
portals default site content database. Eitherway, once you do that:

1) Move the WSS Team sites from your existing SPS2003 farm, onto a standalone
virtual server on a different farm, then do a side-by-side gradual migration/in
place upgrade, etc..your choice.
2) use the Detach/Re-attach method for those content databases to move them in
to the WSSv3 farm and do the inplace upgrade.

Note: SPS 2003 will not be able to index and search your WSS 3.0 sites.

This won't work. You can't run 2003 portal on a 2007 WSS platform.
