upgrade from wss to sharepoint 2007

Asked By: Nilay    Date: Dec 10    Category: MOSS    Views: 653

Just after some advice really. I have a client who has multiple
domains in many branches.

They would like to roll out moss across the organisation. However,
whilst they are planning this the admins in individual domains are
busy downloading and installing WSS 3 in their individual empires.

For political reasons they can stop them doing this but when they
roll out MOSS they want it to cause as little disruption as possible
in these other domains and so would like to issue the admins of these
domains with advice as to how they should handle their environment
before the big MOSS roll out.

The advice I'm thinking of giving them is:

a) Document everything
b) keep a copy of any assets such as web part install binaries and
documentation etc.
c) as WSS uses SQL, ensure the databases and 12 hive have been added
to the nightly backup regime
d) use STSADM to backup individual site collections nightly if you
want to be able to restore individual site collections
e) use compicated passwords on the domain accounts used for services
and use sepaate accounts for each part of the system (as per the
guides)
f) do not install portal server unllicensed, its not free unlike WSS

Can you think of any other advice I should give ? Any pointers would
be greatly appreciated as I can flesh it out - I'm just wondering if
I'm missing anything obvious.

I'm assuming that when it comes to transferring to MOSS I'll be bale
to find some way to import the content (backup and restore sites,
backup individual document libraries and lists etc)

Be aware, some people have had trouble with some MOSS stuff when they
"use separate accounts for each part of the system".

Ao just create a svcsps account and use that for everything
