How to update a user's name in SP?

Asked By: Sandy    Date: Dec 02    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2518

I have a Sharepoint Portal running on top of WSS 2.0.

How do I update the name of a user if their Last Name changes?

I typically add new users to a site by clicking on Site Settings -> Manage
Users -> Add Users. It seems that when a new user is added to a site in
this way that sharepoint pulls their full name from AD.

Since then, the user's last name has changed. I have updated their name in
AD to reflect the change, but now am wondering how I go about updating their
name on the Site? I was thinking that I could remove and readd the user to
the Site user list, but am afraid that doing so would lose any site specific
permissions already granted to the account.

What is the accepted way to update a user's name in Sharepoint?

You can make the change  for each site  collection, as that kind of
information is stored at the site collection level. There is an easier
way. Do an Internet search for "WSSUserUtil." It's a tool written by
Keith Ritchie that will do exactly what you're looking for. You run it
against a SharePoint installation and it updates the usernames will be
updated.

Go to http://server /sites/sitename/_layouts/1033/siteusrs.aspx, click
on the user  name, and click on Edit User information.

To navigate there, go to site  Settings in the top  level site, click on
Go to Site Administration, and then click on View Site Collection User
Information.
