Update on Missing Search Results in SPS

Asked By: Blair    Date: Aug 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 678

I just wanted to provide an update and share some of my new knowledge
with the list. I found the solution to the portal searching problem that
I was having last week.

I'm curious as to whether this is a design decision by Microsoft, or a
known bug. Or perhaps I made a new discovery that I can get named after
me? :-)

The original issue that I conveyed was that the documents in my
non_portal_content index were not showing up in my SPS portal search
results.

It was a strange combination of circumstances that was causing this
issue.

Many of you may have noticed that anyone who is an administrator on the
server hosting SharePoint has implicit access to every portal area and
WSS site hosted on that machine. Even if you are not explicitly granted
access to any of those resources while in SharePoint, you can still open
up the sites/areas, edit documents, delete document, change permissions,
and do anything else that SharePoint allows you to do.

However, what I discovered today is that, in order to see search results
to any of these resources, you have to explicitly be given access to
them in SharePoint.

This led to the reason for my issue. One person who was an administrator
on the machine was creating the WSS sites. In the creation process, he
was not explicitly adding the other administrators as users to the site,
because we were all under the impression that this was not necessary.

So then when the other administrators tried to search for documents in
those sites, they received no results.
