Understanding document property searches?

Asked By: Brendon Summers         Date: Feb 26, 2004      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 1703

In reality, the document properties for an (Office) document stored in an SPS 2003 doc library are stored in 3 places (with identical duplicate values):

1. The document itself
2. The doc library column properties (through property promotion)
3. The full-text index files created by MS Search

Which of #2 and #3 are used when a user uses SPS Advanced Search?

I will say #2 when you search for specific properties  in the advanced search, #3 otherwise

Actually, the document's properties  are only promoted if the column in the doc lib already exists. Otherwise, the properties remain with the document  and are available in the Advanced Search only if you have enabled them to be available via the Managed Crawled Properties link in the Search and Indexing section in the portal.
