Unable to import a data view web part

Asked By: Nicole    Date: Jul 11    Category: MOSS    Views: 2195

I have customized a list view of a document library web part in SharePoint
Designer. When I update my initial web part page with the list view on it, all
is well. Once I export the web part and import it to a different page or even
the same page, I receive the following message:

An unexpected error has occurred.

Web Parts Maintenance Page: If you have permission, you can use this page to
temporarily close Web Parts or remove personal settings.

For more information, contact your site administrator.
Troubleshoot issues with Windows SharePoint Services.

I can then delete the data view web part and return to the page.

I have tried this with minimal customization; converting list view to xslt just
for troubleshooting. Same error.

Below is a detailed description of what I did:
1. I am working in MOSS 2007 and have created a development page that is a web
part page so as not to unghost the default.aspx page on the News Site.
2. I added the list view of the Pages library to the development page;
3. opened the development page in SharePoint Designer
4. converted the list view web part it to XSLT.
5. Saved it in SharePoint Designer
6. opened the development page through the SharePoint interface and refreshed
7. exported the web part.
8. Upon importing it to the same page or to the default.aspx page in the News
Site, I receive the error above.

The XSLT used by the DataForm web  part is normally hard coded using GUIDs and
parameters. Exporting and Re-importing these web parts  will usually work if you
do it on the same page  in the same site. But when you go to a different page or
a different site  you will normally need to manually edit the XSLT to clean up
some of the references or the page will not work.
