Unable to edit page after editing in SharePoint Designer

I deleted a webpart in SharePoint Designer and made some subtle
(though, perhaps major) changes to the spacing in SPD and when I saved
it back to the site I wasn't able to "Edit Page".

I am going to make some assumptions here. It seems to me that you
deleted all of the web part zones on that page. If so, that would
totally limit your use of the edit  Page command. Remember, you can
only edit existing web part zones on a page  using the browser as a
tool.
