Unable to default DateTime in Document Information Panel to "None"

Asked By: Mathew    Date: Dec 25    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2121

I created two new site columns, Publish Start Date and Publish End Date. I set
the default for Publish Start Date to [today], Publish End Date to "None". I
then created a content type, Publishing Document, that inherits from Document
and added these two site columns. I created a document library, enabled content
type management, and associated the Publishing Document content type with the
library. I then removed the default "Document" content type, so I'm just left
with my Publishing Document content type. When I click on "New Publishing
Document", it opens up the Word template and displays the Document Information
Panel. In the Publish Start Date, it shows today's date. In the Publish End
Date, it shows "11/29/1999". What gives? Is this happening to anyone else?

I just tested your steps and if I call the column publishing  End Date it
does what you say, but if I name the column something else it comes up
blank. I suspect that the name is somehow triggering some other usage,
perhaps because it contains 'End Date' since I know that End Date and
Scheduling End Date are used by the publishing system. Try changing the
name of the column to achieve what you want.

I ended up having two issues. One was as you stated. The other was the result
of attempting to deploy via features and leaving the <Default /> in the DateTime
field definitions. Remove the <Default /> and everything works fine.

One more follow up on this.

It's not the field name that's causing the problem. It seems that if you create
a new site  column using the UI and specify a default  of Today and save it, then
go back and change it to "None", it leaves the empty <Default></Default> node in
the field schema, which InfoPath doesn't seem to know what to do with, causing
the behavior mentioned below.

The same behavior can be observed by creating a field definition in CAML and
putting empty <Default /> or <Default></Default> tags in.

Anyone know how to report bugs to Microsoft?
