We are planning for a two server farm. One as a MOSS 2007 server and another
as a database server.I have been given two servers one is a 4 cpu 4gb ram and
another two cpu 4 gb ram. Please let me know which server needs to be more
powerful the front end or the database server.

The Database server  must be the most powerfull server in farm... if
you got a high number of clients, so you think in a better server.

I'm not sure that's entirely true, especially in a two server  farm where some
additional processing (search query, indexing, excel services, farm
administration, etc) is happening on the WFE rather than an application server.
I'm thinking the WFE should have the additional processing power.

With two servers, the processing is likely to be identical. You could always
think outside of the box and put indexing and ECS on the 4 proc SQL box. Just
ideas to get you going...
