Trouble adding a user in SharePoint Portal server 2003 - Sharepoint

I'm getting the following error when I try to add a user to a
site:

"Error

Can not add the user because a user with that name already exists."

The problem is I don't see the user listed anywhere in the Manage Users
page for this site and the person cannot access the site.

Any ideas? Could this be a profile issue of some kind?

Could you add users thru stsadm command and tell me what happened?

You need to also check http://[site url]/_layouts/1033/siteusrs.aspx

remove the user from site collection admin and then try to add the user!
