Timeouts on AddContentDB For Upgrading

ve been trying to do a migration from V2 to V3 using the STSADM -o
AddContentDB operation. I am consistently getting an error message early
on that says "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to
completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

The database is about 8 GB.

I've tried several things:

* Pre-allocating the size of the transaction log file on the

* Increasing the timeout settings in the web.config in the 12

* Increasing the timeout settings of the web application in IIS

My suspicion, however, tells me that it is not timing out. I get the
error message pretty quickly - within 30 seconds or so of running the

Are you seeing any relevant errors in the sharepoint logs.

Have you confirmed the SQL Temp DB has the capacity to deal with the
amount of temporary space needed

The only SharePoint log  I see is the Upgrade log file  in the 12\Logs
folder, which is what gives me the timeout error  message.

You may be on to something with SQL Temp DB file. TempDB.mdf and
TempLog.ldf are running  on the C: drive of a virtual machine, and the C:
drive only has 1.5 GB of room left. The database  that I'm trying to
upgrade is running on an external hard drive that has plenty of room.
But I think what you're saying is that I need to allow the temp one to

I found a blog describing how to move TempDB, and followed the steps
successfully. It is now running on my external drive, which has close
to 40 GB of free space in it.

Do I need to pre-allocate space on the temp DB as well? And do I do so
on the log file or on the database file itself? If so, how much space
should I allocate?
