Are there disadvantages to turning on SharePoint Server Publishing

We are working on our first implementation of SharePoint 2007 with a
partner web. Our inclination is to use Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
to deploy separate site collections using the Team Site template.

We noticed that you can turn on Office SharePoint Server Publishing
Infrastructure to get the Site Directory, Hierarchy Manager role and
some other functionality that is not inherently included in the Team
Site template.

Are there any disadvantages to turning on this feature for each site
collection?

If not is there a way to include the activation of the feature so that
it is by default on during the creation of a site collection through
Central Admin?
