TFS and SharePoint - is redundancy possible?

  Asked By: Conor    Date: Nov 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1556

I've been asked to prepare for a "failover" of our Team
Foundation 2008 Server (whch includes SharePoint WSS 3.0) to a second
geographical location.

In many topologies the Team Foundation Application Tier Server is
usually the SharePoint server. I'm reviewing
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252486
<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252486> about building a
"warm standby" Application Tier Server, and a "warm
standby" SharePoint Server.

Partial Answers: While writing the material below I stumbled on this
blogs.msdn.com/.../migrating-sharepoin" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">blogs.msdn.com/.../migrating-sharepoint" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">blogs.msdn.com/.../migrating-sharepoint\
-to-a-new-box.aspx
<blogs.msdn.com/.../migrating-sharepoin" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">blogs.msdn.com/.../migrating-sharepoin\
t-to-a-new-box.aspx> which appears to walk you through modifying TFS to
use a failover SharePoint Server.

Background: I currently manage a two single server TFS implementations,
and two large SharePoint Farms so I have a some knowledge of all the
intricacies involved but wouldnt call myself an expert yet. I've
done plenty of research and I am already familiar with:

1) How to: Activate a Fail-Over Application-Tier Server,
msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms252501.aspx
<msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms252501.aspx>
2) How to: Rename an Application-Tier Server
msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms252469.aspx
<msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms252469.aspx>
3) How to: Connect a Different Application-TierServer to the Data Tier
msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms253185.aspx
<msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms253185.aspx>
4) Supported TFS Topologies

<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms400668" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms400668(VS.80).aspx>
5) Data protection and recovery for Office SharePoint Server (White
paper)" technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262129.aspx
<technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262129.aspx> and
6) "Using Database Mirroring with Office SharePoint Server and Windows
SharePoint Services "
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262910.aspx
<technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262910.aspx> .

I am now researching the following:
blogs.msdn.com/.../team-foundation-serv" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">blogs.msdn.com/.../team-foundation-serv\
er-2005-windows-sharepoint-service-3-0-how-to-failover-to-a-mirrored-dat\

<blogs.msdn.com/.../team-foundation-ser\
ver-2005-windows-sharepoint-service-3-0-how-to-failover-to-a-mirrored-da\
ta-tier-server.aspx> and
blogs.msdn.com/.../tfs-2008-failover-wss-3-0.aspx
<blogs.msdn.com/.../tfs-2008-failover-wss-3-0.aspx>

Because I am trying to failover the SharePoint Farm to run from a new
location I'm wondering I should follow the following doc
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303311.aspx
<technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303311.aspx> "Deploy a
new server farm, then migrate content databases" ?

The following doc states to run your SharePoint Server for TFS on a
separate server (other than your Application Tier or Data Tier Servers)
Team Foundation Installation Guide for Visual Studio Team System 2008
www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx4" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx\

<www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx\
4FE9-8B0D-9E84181D9923&displaylang=en> but it doesn't go into
failover scenarios.

How would I tell the TFS Server to use the new SharePoint Server?
Can anyone point me to the doc that shows how to configure a TFS
environment that has a standalone failover SharePoint Server?

Any TFS Admin's out there that have recommendations for a Failing over
TFS\WSS environment to a second site, and then back to a primary site?
I have to prove to mgt that we are prepared for a catastrophe......
