Team Site with Multiple Pages

We like the multipage meeting workspace site template. However we
would like to use the multiple page / tab design for a blank team
site. Tried to create a new site definition from the meeting
workspace definition but got errors that the page web part would
only function in a meeting workspace. Information from another
discussion group says its not possible to create new site
definitions from MPS definitions and that creating STS Site
definition with tabs would be very difficult. Is this correct?

Not sure that I fully understand your question. You can completely alter the
configuration of the Meeting Workspace Site Definition in the "60 Hive"
under ..\60\TEMPLATE\1033\MPS. I'm quite certain that you could (with some
potentially significant trial and error testing) alter the Site Definition
to look like a Team Site in a multi-page environment. What would be very
difficult would be to try to include the page / tab functionality into the
Site Definition in the "60 Hive" under ..60\TEMPLATE\1033\STS.

I have gotten around this issue in a wss site by utilizing a links
bar to simulate the tabs, and linking each button on the link bar to
a web part page. Working with the link bar needs to be done in
frontpage, but it is pretty easy to do.

Additionally, if you store the webpart pages in seperate document
libraries, the pages will inherrit the permissions of the library...
making it possible to permission a page to a specific group.
