Tasks associated with workflows & Editing the associated document

Hopefully I'm missing something really obvious here.

A) We have a custom workflow created in C#, a custom Task content
type, and several document content types that feed into the workflow.

B) Within individual document libraries, a document has the "Edit"
dropdown menu associated to it, and can be opened in Read-Only, or
Checked out and edited.

C) Within the Tasks list, the link to the document (from the
associated list item) has no drop-down... This is as I would expect

D) However, when you click on the link to the item, it opens in Read-
Only (Office 2007 and 2003), with no prompt to check-out the

E) Furthermore, in Office 2003, opening the document from the link in
the task item has Word losing track of the source (saving forces the
user to browse for the SharePoint library, instead of defaulting the
current location).

The problem here is that users need to be able to edit their
documents if they get rejected back to them as part of the workflow.
Doing this from the Tasks list gives users a "The document is read
only" error (or worse).

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to open a document from the
link in "Tasks" as: 1) Not Read-Only and 2) Mindful of its own
location in Office 2003? Alternatively, can anyone suggestion how to
display to users only documents with an associated task assigned to
